Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994. However, there are rumors according to which King Hussein, the father of the current King Abdullah, had close relationships with several Israeli politicians. According to the rumors, during the 30 years prior to 1994, King Hussein even met Israeli officials in person several times.

Historical relationship

The British mandate of Palestine was divided into four major sectors by the United Nations in order to accommodate a homeland for the Jews in Israel. Two sectors were to go to each of Israel and Palestine. After adjustment of the proposed borders in favour of Israel, Israel declared independence in 1948.

Political relationship

Israel became the occupying power in Palestine, but has ceded a level of autonomy. However, Palestinians say that the dividing wall is intended to further reduce the size of the Palestinian territories, as are Israeli settlements in Palestine.

Iraq and Israel are enemies. Iraq did not even sign an armistice with Israel in the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-9, preferring to withdraw behind the Jordanian line when the Jordanians agreed to a ceasefire. Israel bombed Iraq's Osirak Reactor in 1981, preventing Iraq from becoming a nuclear power. Israel also helped Iran in the Iran-Iraq War by providing weapons to the Iranians.

However, Iraqi Kurdistan is beginning to reach out to Israel. Israeli citizens can now fly to Erbil, Iraq (the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan) to conduct regional business with prior authorization, even though they are prohibited elsewhere. It will be interesting to see as Kurdistan becomes more autonomous from Baghdad if there will be a dual-Israel policy in Iraq where Kurdistan recognizes Israel but Iraq as a whole will not.

There is currently no conflict between Israel and Jordan. The two countries have cordial and relatively warm relations.

Historically, Israel and Jordan were enemies due to the Arab-Israeli Conflict and Jordan refused to recognize Israel until 1994. The change in opinion came after the Oslo Accords when Israel recognized the Palestinian Authority and strove to negotiate for the future of the Palestinian People and their State.

Jordan and Israel are on good terms and have a number of mutual initiatives but they have no military alliance or strong political alliance. Jordan plays neutral between the Arab States and Israel and often advocates for the Palestinians in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
