Both the movie and the play- it never was a novel in the usual sense- glamorize crime in the streets to some sort of heroic heights. ethnic violence between whites and Puerto Ricans is in some ways the keystone of the plot. law enfrocement is shown in a somewhat negative light. N"uff said.

the conflict is there are two gangs the sharks and jets and they cant stand each other and they plan to have a rumble to settle their differences but within the planning tony (who used to be a Jet) and Maria( the sister of the Sharks' leader, Bernardo) see each other and truly fall in love knowing that their gangs are against each other they risk it for true love
