He designed several computers for Harvard University, starting with the electromechanical Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator which was built by IBM but after an argument between Aiken and IBM he renamed it the Harvard Mark i and banished IBM from Harvard. The rest of his computers were built entirely by people from Harvard.

∙ 8y agoHe designed the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (ASCC) electromechanical computer at Harvard, contracted with IBM to build it, then threw IBM off the Harvard campus when they attempted to put cover panels with IBM logos on them on "his machine" for publicity photos and a movie (he wanted no cover panels to facilitate maintenance). After this he renamed the machine the Harvard Mark 1. IBM remained banished from Harvard for decades.
