In-ground, gunite pool There are various salt-water chlorination systems and the cost varies, depending on the type and size of filtration pump and controls selected. You have an initial expenditure to add so many pounds of salt (not table salt) to your pools water depending on total volume. Also, you have regular maintenance -about every six months to clean the cells in the chlorine generator. Eventually the plates that convert the salt into chlorine and back to salt again will have to be replaced and that has a cost too. Check into it. The overall cost vs. savings are about the same whether using a tablet type chlorinator, and/or liquid chlorine, vs,. the salt system. The main thing is how it is for the skin and eyes -how it feels. A caution is consider how it will be splashed onto planting areas and concrete decks, or masonry. From time to time you will have to "shock" the pool water with the addition of liquid chlorine or chemical in order to maintain balance when heavy use by bathers is expected. You don't really get away from that possibility even if the design to handle the volume of water is correct. One of the best systems is the Goldline Controls Aqualogic PS4, PS8, etc. paired with with the Aquarite Turbocell chlorinator. You can expect to spend "bottomline"upwards of $2500.00 plus just for the chlorination parts and controls alone. See www.swimmingpoolsetc.com and Pentair.com Pentair / StaRite makes a great 4 x 160 variable speed pump that will also reduce energy costs -but the controls can be pricey if full automation is desired.

That would depend on the size of the system and what sort of system you are intending to use.

There are two types 1 Sodium chloride Or common salt

and

2 a new system using Magnesium and potassium chloride Chloride (environmentally and physically friendlier)

If your pool is already running and you have all your levels balanced, (alkalinity, chlorine, ph, etc) and you do the installation yourself, your only cost will be the salt water generator and salt. I recently purchased a compupool chlorinator for $625 (on ebay) and spent about $100 on salt for my 25,000 gal. pool. You can buy bags of salt for $5.97 at Walmart. The same exact salt runs from $7.99 at one pool store to $13.95 a bag at another pool store close to home. So, for me, it was about $725. I did spend about $150 when I opened the pool on some shock and a few other chemicals and parts and supplies. I could have spent a bit less if I found the web site troublefreepools.com before I purchased the overpriced pool store stuff!

The cost of a salt water chlorination system will vary on the volume of the pool. If you were to purchase a Gold-Line Aqua-Rite system it would cost around $800 for a unit that will chlorinate a pool up to 15,000 gallons, $950 for a 25,000 gallon pool, and $1,200 for 40,000 gallon pool. I would recommend over seizing the system so you will be able to run the unit for shorter periods of time and extend the life of the cell. You will also need to add salt to the pool again based on the volume for larger pools it may take up to 600lbs.

Will saltwater harm honed sandstone coping tiles in any way?

Firstly, you should only have water that is treated with salt - not 'saltwater'. Pool water will always leave deposits in the pool and the surrounding area. If the coping is correctly sealed with a high quality stone sealer it will be fine if it's kept clean and deposits are hosed and bushed off on a regular basis. I'd also suggest sealing the sandstone coping a couple of times a year.
