Thomas Jefferson wrote a document declaring the independence of The United States from Great Britain. The Continental Congress of the United States on July 4, 1776 voted to approve that document and called it The Declaration of Independence. It consists of four sentences containing the reasoning and then a bill of particulars. Those first four sentences have been quoted in documents all over the world. The most well known phrase is, "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal."
