Asian refers to people, places, and things from the Asian Continent, from Turkey to the Middle East, India, China, Mongolia, parts of Russia such as Siberia, and the south-east Asian countries such as Burma, Cambodia, Korea, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Oriental refers to people, places, and things to the East of the Asian Continent, such as Japan, the Philipines, and Indonesian islands. Racially one can easily distinguish the people by their slanted eyes, that is not common in the south-east Asian countries, e.g. in Thailand or in Indonesia.

What is the difference between oriental and Asian?

Asian simply means an ethnicity from the continent of Asia. Oriental means someone of an ethnicity of the Orient, like China, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Korea, etc. The term "oriental" is frowned upon in Canada, USA and Australia as offensive, so such people tend to use "Asian" to refer to them in sometimes their close relatives like the Polynesians and even Amerindians. In the UK, "Asian" means someone from South Asia (like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, etc.), and the term "oriental" is not viewed as offensive.

What is the difference between Oriental and Occidental?

Occidental (as an adjective) is a literary or formal word for western. It is usually capitalized if you are using it to refer to people in its noun form like an inhabitant, especially a native, of the Occident. Henry David Thoreau uses the word in a famous quote: "There is a struggle between the Oriental and the Occidental in every nation; some who would be forever contemplating the sun, and some who are hastening toward the sunset. The former class says to the latter, "when you have reached the sunset, you will be no nearer to the sun." To which the latter replies, "but we so prolong the day."" Oriental is pertaining to, or characteristic of the Orient, or East; Eastern.
