MT760 This is a Swift class 7: Bank Guarantee and Letter of Credit procedure, Procedure 60: Blocked Funds. The Course of Action When Your Bank Issues An MT-760: When an MT-…760 is issued, the issuing bank puts a hold on the client's funds, blocking the client from using them. The funds are then at the disposal of the person the MT-760 was issued in favor of. For this reason it is not wise to issue an MT-760 before being absolutely certain as this can mean a large financial loss for absolutely no gain. In some cases, unscrupulous traders will use the MT-760 to open a line of credit, which they then default on, leaving the issuer of the MT-760 liable. What A MT-760 Looks Like: It is important to remember that an MT-760 is actually an interbank communication, so one never really sees an MT-760. You may need a special account to be able to use this procedure. The Cost of A MT-760: The cost of an MT-760 varies greatly from bank to bank. Be aware however, that due to the amount of risk involved for a bank in guaranteeing payment, a MT-760 is normally fairly expensive, with the usual bank fee for issuing a MT-760 being between 0.5% and 1.5% of the total value of the funds blocked. Potential of Negotiation Once A MT-760 is Sent: Once a MT-760 has been issued, it is not negotiable. For this reason, many traders prefer a Letter of Credit, which is negotiable and can be amended in response to unforeseen changes in circumstances, such as a delayed shipping schedule, lower production than anticipated, and other such events. How You Get A MT-760: A MT-760 can be obtained from a bank on the international SWIFT bank network. However not all US banks are on this network, so you may have to change bank. A lawyer, private banker, equity funds cannot be on on Swift, only banks. So no broker or financial institution other than a bank can help you with blocking funds. The banks underwrites the blocked funds with the funds in the client's account, and if this is not fully funded, they will make other banks "confirm" their guarantee, spreading the risk.
Answer MT760 is in finance and banking a Swift procedure in class 7 - "Bank Guarantees and Letters of Credit" - where the client's bank blocks funds for the beneficiary's ba…nk. This means that the client cannot use the funds or financial instruments used to back the blocking. All banks provide this between banks, typically in the context of inter-bank payment and clearing, but not all will do this for their clients. They may also require special accounts to be used to "block". If you have "blocked" a guarantee, and the beneficiary's bank calls on the guarantee, the client's bank must pay - in funds (not instruments) the face value of the guarantee. An Letter of Credit is not "blocked", but set operative. See the Swift website for a full definition of the procedure with the rest of the banking procedures. These procedures will be replaced by XML based message formats, and these procedures are called "MX".

What Is SWIFT? SWIFT is the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications. This is a Belgian organization, founded in 1973 in response to a UN request to imple…ment electronic payment systems for banks. The SWIFT messaging system is a series of standardized messages which have authority in over eight thousand banks in over two hundred countries. It is based on the UN EDIFACT message format, so has been around since 1985. Why Are SWIFT Messages so commonly used? A SWIFT message can be sent and received within seconds, and though they are still subject to processing time, this is much quicker than sending communications through the mail, and is much more secure. Swift will use their own physical cables, and will never be sent on the Internet. It cannot be intercepted, cannot be duplicated and iwith security that compare to military s[ecifications. They do not use TCP/IP but is based on OSI, typically X.400 protocol. SWIFT Codes There are SWIFT codes which correspond to various types of procedures. 'MT' is just "Message Tag" and is then followed by a Message Class (here "7") and a two digit procedure number. Class 7 is "Letters of Credit and Guarantees", and procedure 60 is "blocked funds". What Happens When My Bank Issues An MT-760? When an MT-760 is issued, the issuing bank puts a hold on the client's funds, blocking the client from using them. This will allow the beneficiary's bank to allow this to e.g. establish a ine of credit. backed by the funds on the client's account. So, the seller can now use this to pay subcontractors and get equipment ready for delivery. It is therefore imperative that an agreement exists between the parties that governs the use of the blocked funds, so that the client is liable to pay for goods or services never received. Is A MT-760 Negotiable? No. Once a MT-760 has been issued, it is not negotiable. How Do I Get A MT-760? All banks on the international Swift network can issue MT760. However financial brokers, lawyers, equity fund manager, investment funds and private bankers cannot issue Swift procedures. The bank may demand that you use a special account for this procedure. MT799 is a simple text message, sent bank to bank. This is used for a bank to bank proof of funds, only. The MT799 is not a form of payment and it is not a bank undertaking or… promise to pay. It is simply a bank to bank confirmation of the funds on deposit, nothing more. The MT-799 is usually issued before a contract is signed and before a letter of credit or bank guarantee is issued. After the MT-799 has been received by the seller's bank, it is then normally the responsibility of the seller's bank to send a POP (proof of product) to the buyer's bank, at which point the trade continues towards commencement. The actual payment method commonly used is a documentary letter of credit, which the seller presents to the issuing or confirming bank along with shipping documents. Once the bank confirms the documents, the seller is then paid. An alternative method is to use a bank guarantee in place of a letter of credit. It is normally at the seller's discretion which method of payment is used. Feel free to drop by your comments and inquiry at email@example.com

MT 760 is blocking funds or a guarantee placed by the client. Issue it, and it gone, but beware it has several fields that determines how the funds can be called on. Once in M…T760 the funds or guarantee is operative, and can be called on by the beneficiary. MT 799 is free text format in reference to a guarantee or a letter of credit. So the text of the MT799 can be anything, including "Moms best pancake recipe" as long as it is related to the guarantee or L/C in place. Typical use of MT799 is to exchange information that triggers payment or the guarantee. MT799 is not intended to be used to confirm that a client is capable of this and that, and will never confirm availability of funds. That is only applicable on Internet traders, joker brokers and wishful legal counselors ignorant of banking. No lender will accept "Moms best recipes" as anything more than what they are worth.
