2.You usually use Word in writing letters or essays while Excel is good for creating documents that has a lot of data that needs to be presented in table form

Um, I beleive they are the same. They are both regular Microsoft Excel. I have both a mac and a pc and I have Microsoft Office (including Microsoft Excel) 2011 on both of them. And they seem to be the same, I watched tutorials online for school (I am a high school student so I do most of my asignments online) for Excel, because I take tech class, and in the captions of the tutorials it said "Microsoft Excel Regular" and it seemed to be the same. Cause I followed the directions for the tutorials, and it worked fine, the Excel interface was identical to the ones of the tutorials. So, I guess they are the same. But I may be wrong, I am not sure, but u know maybe its just the name of the packages. Like for example if you buy the entire Microsoft Office like I did, then it just says Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel. But then maybe if u buy just Excel, then it says Excel regular because it doesn't come with the whole package, just with Excel? Maybe that's why. I guess u should go on their website and check. I am sure they also have some TechSupport or something where u could ask or call Customer Service or something. Like I said, I think that's why, but I am not sure. So, if I were u I would check with Microsoft itself, like on its website or any retailer like BestBuy or Sears that may carry its products and therefore have some more info about it. Well, hope I helped! Good luck with finding out! :)
Each of the Microsoft Office applications are for different things. Excel is a spreadsheet application, which none of the others are. You create spreadsheets with Excel. With Word you create word processing documents, with Powerpoint you create presentations, with Access you create databases and with Outlook you look after email and contacts. Other applications included in versions of Office also have their specific purposes. There is a certain amount of overlap between all of the applications, so there are elements of what Excel can do that can be done in the other applications, but if you wanted to do a detailed spreadsheet, you would not do so by using the tables feature in Word, even though it can do some limited calculations.

There is no Microsoft application titled "Proficient." The only reference I can think of that relates to the phrase "Microsoft Proficient," is I have seen it occasionally in job ads to indicate that the applicant is expected to have a reasonable proficiency level with Microsoft Office applications (usually referring to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
