Neoclassicism featured a clean and linear style, a subdued palette, sculpted forms, shallow depth of background and fine draftsmanship. There was a need to seek the very best, to do the very best, to use ancient Greek and Roman models of goodness and purity. A carefully drawn line and a finely planned design were seen as superior to the seduction of bright color and high contrasts. Heaven only knew after all that chaos, where passion might lead. Better to be thoughtful and safe. Space and movement were defined and clear. Art was not meant to stimulate the emotions but to enlighten the mind.
