Up until the early 1990's the Toyota Celica GT was powered by a 2.2 Liter engine, which produced 110 horsepower. The GTS from that period had a 2.4 liter engine that produced 135 horsepower.

ANSWER: Not sure about the '90's Celicas but in the late '80's, all Celicas had a 2 liter engine with the GT-S having a little bit more powerful engine. The horse power ratings given above are correct though. The GT-S models also have more convenience options. Also usually bigger tires.

ANSWER: 83 and 84 had the 2.4l 22R, while the 85 had the 2.4l 22RE. Aluminum Engine, the Achilles heel of which is that the head bolts came under-torqued... leading to many a blown head-gasket.

Celica's between 2000 and 2005 were 1.8 liter for the GT, and 1.8 litre for the GTS. The GTS featured a more powerful engine with "lift", a 6 speed transmission, and 4 wheel disk brakes. While the GT had less power, a 5 speed transmission, and drum brakes in the back. The GTS typically had a better sound system, although the sound systems was an option available on certain GT models.

Also 2000 to 2002 GT engines had common oil burning issues that were corrected for the 03 models.
