A hermit crab uses the old shell of another sea animal (ex. snail). I true crab uses its own natural shell. A hermit crab makes its home in a snail shell or anything really. It has a soft abdomen that is very vulnerable to the outside and can be smooshed easily almost like a caterpillars skin. So it hides its back end in a protective covering. A regular crab already has its own exoskeleton that is hard and durable so they don't need a shell to protect them. Also, regular crabs live in the water a majority of the time and a hermit crab can either be completely dependent on water, these are called saltwater hermit crabs who live like a fish at the bottomof the ocean, or you have a typical land hermit crab that lives on the beaches and sometimes even a mile off shore. They do not need a large amount of water or food to survive. These are the crabs you find in the pet store in the fancy painted shells.

A snail is a soft-bodied invertebrate belonging to the Molluscs. Snails are most closely related to slugs. Other molluscs include cephalopods such as octopi and squid, and bivalves such as clams and oysters. Snails grow hard shells of calcium carbonate for their protection.

A hermit crab is from another phylum of invertebrates called arthropods, which posses a hardened exoskeleton of chitin. Hermit crabs are most closely related to ordinary crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. Other arthropods include insects and Spiders. Hermit craps are noted for living in the old shells of dead snails, switching to bigger shells as they grow.

Actually, a hermit crab is not a true crab, no matter what other people say. They are not real crabs, but are close in the animal kingdom, making others believe they are.

Most crabs have shells, but the hermit crab is a type of crab that doesn't. Instead, they adopt discarded mollusc shells such as whelks and periwinkles, and use their shell.

Can you put half hermit crab sand and half fish rock in a tank in a 10 gallon tank for a hermit crab?

I think that the fish rock might be a little too hard for your hermit crab because he needs soft enough sand to be able to molt and when they molt their skin is sensitive so the fish rock will probably make him uncomfortable.

Do hermit crabs need a heat rock?

While hermit crabs do need heat, a heat rock is not a very good solution. Hermit Crabs can and will overheat themselves on a heat rock. A heat rock can get up to 100+ degrees, which is WAY to hot for a hermit crab. A better solution is to use an under tank heater pad, and mount it on the side of the tank. 2 small pads covering a corner is even better. You should make sure and have a cool side and warm side for your hermit crabs. Maintain about 80 degrees f on the warm side, and about 70 degrees f on the cool side and your hermit crab should be just fine. Keep the humidity at above 75% as well.
