Disease is the older term of the two. Historically, it implies a relative permanence, non-subjectivity, and invariance of symptoms and causation beyond psychiatric illness. Those wishing to avoid negative stigma often prefer "disorder"; in contrast, those wishing to highlight molecular or genetic causation may opt for "disease", e.g. "alcoholism is a disease".

Disorder is a newer term, often used for illnesses where the origin, duration, or physiological basis of an illness is relatively unknown. It is also used where there is a clear underlying cause, yet symptoms have an unusually wide, often subtle, range.

Personality is an issue that has troubled every deep thinking man since the beginning of time. Despite all the work that has been done to get a better understanding of human p…ersonality, there is still a lot left to unravel. Researchers are only just beginning to scratch the surface of the mysterious nature of personality disorders. The study of personality disorders dates as far back as the times of Aristotle who was able to classify the Citizens of Athens into thirty different personality types. His work set the foundations for more recent work in uncovering personality disorders. The American Volume of Psychiatric disorders DSM IV defines personality disorders as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behaviour that deviates markedly from cultural expectations, is inflexible and pervasive, has its onset at adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time and leads to distress and impairment. There are about 10 different personality types.Paranoid personality disorder like the name suggests, is synonymous with a deep distrust of others including family, friends and relatives. The person is usually wary, guarded and suspicious. These types are always on the hunt for a way to confirm their fears about everyone else. This type of person has a strong sense of entitlement and doesn't take kindly to setbacks and rebuffs. They usually have problems staying in relationships and have a tendency to withdraw from close relationships.This type of personality disorder can easily be deciphered from its name. Schizoid means to separate oneself from the external and focus on the internal. In schizoid personality disorder the person is distant, prone to lengthy introspection and fantasy. The schizoid personality often has no desire to engage in social or sexual relationships. They are indifferent to others and established norms and customs of society. The schizoid personality often desire meaningful long lasting relationships but just cannot seem to muster the willpower to move towards their desires.Schizotypal personality disorder is characterized by differences in behavior, appearance, speech and anomalies in thinking that differs widely from what is accepted. They have similar traits to what you find in Schizophrenics. People with schizotypal disorders often shy away from social interaction. Sufferers of Schizotypal disorder have a high chance of degenerating into full blown schizophrenia at some time in the future. They often have a false impression that certain things have special significance to them or to their situations.Sufferers of this disorder essentially lack a sense of self. They often experience a feeling of abandonment and loneliness. These people are often suicidal and end up hurting themselves even if they don't succeed in committing suicide. In many areas borderline personality disorder is thought to be as a result of childhood sexual abuse. Women are also thought to be more prone to borderline personality disorder since they are more often the victims of sexual abuse.Sufferers of dependent personality disorders are completely dependent on others for any feeling of esteem. They lack any feelings of self worth, confidence and have an irrepressible desire to be taken care of. Those with dependent personality disorders often see themselves as helpless and useless. They often thrust their fates into the hands of others. Those with dependent personality disorder often like to associate themselves with those who they see to be held in high regard by others around them.Personality types and disorders are still being studied extensively in many areas. Aristotle is thought to have started from the times of antiquity. Aristotle is credited with some of the earliest research work where he classified the people of Athens into 30 different personality types. Aristotle's work set the tone for more modern work on personality disorders.DSM-IV classifies ten personality types into three different clusters or groups labelled A, B or C. Medical terms can be confusing. Words like disorder and disease get confused and interchanged. Do they mean the same thing? Many might be surprised to learn that the definitio…n of disorder and disease are different. What is even more surprising is that mental illnesses are disorders and not diseases most of the time.The definition of disorder is slightly less specific than that of disease. A disorder often denotes a set of symptoms without a physical, functional change in the body. For example, someone might have a mental disorder such as an eating disorder, without lab tests to show a physical malfunction of any kind. The word disorder may also be used in place of disease but the two are not synonymous. A mental disorder is a set of symptoms that involve the mood and the brain.A disease is a process that results from a functional impairment that is able to be detected by medical testing. Disease is usually more associated with sickness than a disorder. A mental disease might be something like Alzheimer's or a tumor. A disorder, on the other hand, is a collection of symptoms that may not show up on a lab test but which responds to medication and therapy. A disease will not usually improve without medical intervention.Mental disorders may not be life-threatening disease most of the time, but they do impact daily life. Mental illnesses are more common than you might think. Common ones include mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and major depression, anxiety disorders such as social anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, over a quarter of American adults suffer from mental illness. That does not count the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorders of Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).Unlike many diseases, a mental disorder cannot be diagnosed by any doctor or layman. A mental disorder must meet specific diagnostic criteria. These criteria are set forth by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). Trained psychologists and psychiatrists diagnose a disorder based on the classification the symptoms align with under the DSM-IV. The DSM also provides the time range that symptoms must usually be present and at what severity. The DSM-V will completely replace the fourth version in May 2013.The treatment for a mental disorder varies by the disorder. For some disorders such as OCD, behavioral therapy has better success than medication. Autism is another disorder that responds well to behavioral therapy, specifically Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), on the other hand, responds primarily to medication. Mood disorders also respond well to medication, although mood disorders do benefit from therapy. Because disorders do not usually stem from a structural impairment, surgery is rarely used as a treatment for a mental disorder.The words disorder and disease can be confusing. In layman's terms it makes little difference; however, when talking about real illnesses knowing the difference can be helpful. A disorder is a cluster of symptoms that generally does not have a structural cause. A disease often has a structural or physical cause and can usually be diagnosed via a laboratory or other medical test. Diseases have the connotation of being more life-threatening as well.The word condition is sometimes used in place of disease or disorder. A now-antiquated term, the word was originally used to describe a state of being, either healthy or sick. The term is sometimes used in place of disease or disorder when a neutral word is desired. These shows have… opened viewers' eyes and provided a compassionate depiction of how certain disorders affect people's daily living.From older-child adoption to interracial marriage, NBC's hit drama 'Parenthood' often earns praise for realistically tackling complicated issues that Hollywood normally glosses over. Another one of those issues is Asperger syndrome. Actor Max Burkholder plays a young boy who suffers from the disorder, and he works with doctors to make sure he gets the portrayal just right, something parents of children with Asperger syndrome praise the show for.'Breaking Bad' was one of the hottest shows of the early 2010s, and viewers got to learn a bit about cerebral palsy while they watched. Walter White, Jr., the main character's son, suffers from the disorder. The actor who played him, RJ Mitte, also suffers from a mild form of the disability and says he had to learn to make the symptoms more pronounced for the role.During the early 1990s, 'Life Goes On' became the first television show to feature a main character with Down syndrome. As a matter of fact, ABC requested a show centered around actor Chris Burke, who was born with the condition. Burke played Corky, a member of the Thatcher family, whose parents decided to try to integrate him into society. The show proved that people with Down syndrome can do many of the things people who do not have it do.The 1990s medical drama 'ER' made George Clooney a star, but it also put the spotlight on another important topic: HIV. It became one of the first shows to feature a character who suffered from the disorder without it leading to death. Jeanie Boulet, a woman who has an affair with one of the main doctors on staff in the ER, finds out her husband is HIV-positive and that she is, too. The show depicts the changes and challenges she faces with her new prognosis.'The Big C,' which aired on Showtime between 2010 and 2013, focuses on cancer and how it affects the life of its main character Cathy and the lives of her friends and family. After learning she has melanoma, she decides to really start living life. She has an affair, attempts to get her son on the right path, and rekindles her relationship with her eccentric brother.Showtime was also home to 'The United States of Tara,' a comedy about a suburban mom and wife who develops dissociative identity disorder. Though it has its laughs, the show often earned praise throughout its three-year run for the way it portrayed the family who learns to cope with a mom who has multiple personalities.'Switched at Birth' tells the story of two teenage girls who find out their parents took the wrong babies home from the hospital after their births. The two families eventually end up living together and learning to navigate the way the new information affects their lives.
