The Kea is an alpine parrot usually living above the forest line. Greenish in colour but with bright red under the wings.

The Kaka is a similar looking parrot living mainly inside the forest. Distinct species, and quite different cry.

There are many differences between the takahe and the kiwi.

Kiwi are Flightless Birds which are members of the group known as ratites, so they are related to emus, ostriches, rheas and cassowaries; takahe are large, flightless members of the rail family.

Depending on the species, the kiwi may stand up to about 45 cm (18 in) high, and weigh between 1.3 kg and 4.5 kg (between 3 and 10 pounds). The takahe weighs up to 4 kg, and has a length of about 63 cm.

The kiwi's egg is almost as big as that of the emu (150mm long and about the same diameter) and is one of the largest in proportion to its body size compared to other birds. Upon hatching, the chicks are able to fend for themselves within days, and they do not tend to stay with their parents for long, which accounts for e high mortality rate of kiwi chicks. Takahe chicks, on the other hand, will stay with eir parents for up to two years.

Kiwi prefer native forest habitat native forests, but they are now found in kauri and coniferous forest where the undergrowth is dominated by tree ferns, as well as temperate rainforests. Due to habitat clearing, the kiwi is now forced to survive in semi-wooded forest, scrubland and agricultural areas, although the Haast Tokoeka kiwi is found in high sub-alpine tussock grasslands of the South Island. The takahe, however, has been driven to survive only in Fiordland, where predators are fewer.

Kiwi are omnivores, feeding on insects, larvae, worms, eels, frogs, fungi, fruit and seeds. Takahe are more specialist feeders: their diet is primarily snow tussock shoots in summer, and fern rhizomes from the forest in winter.

For the most part, kiwi are brown. Some are darker or lighter than others, depending on species, and most are also speckled with white or lighter flecks. Most also have lighter faces and underbellies. The North Island Brown Kiwi, for example, has a thick covering of shaggy, hairy, brown-grey feathers, while the Great Spotted Kiwi, also known as the Great Grey Kiwi, varies from grey to light brown in colour, but its feathers are covered with black spots. Takahe, on e other hand, are much more colourful. Their plumage is turquoise, purple, brown-green and navy, and they have a white undertail and bright orange-red bill and legs.

Depends how close together they're standing.

A takahe has a much rounder body, while a pukeko has a slimmer body. A takahe is green and blue, while a pukeko is black and blue. A takahe is also about twice the size.
