a rebellion is when a group of people wants to overthrow a person in power or a higher authority by force, it involves violence. a resistance, on the other hand, can be more passive. it's when a group of people are against a rule or law and they refuse to follow it (for example: a law says you can't sit on the floor, and you and your friends decide to sit on the floor).
in most cases you can look at it like this: in a rebellion, the rebels are the aggressors. in resistance, the resistors are the aggressed.
Insurgency is an act of rebellion against a constituted authority whereas resistance is a group of people who are dedicated for resisting foreign occupation or an invasion. The main difference is that insurgency does not involve resistance against foreign invasions but only against the same nation in which they are located.
Rebellion is an action used to overthrow a government or institution. Resistance is merely an oppostion to somebody or something, or a refusal to comply or cooperate. You may form a resistance by having a few people agree not to follow a certain rule issued by an authoritive figure; say your coach telling you to do 100 push-ups every time you arrive late for practice. But when you choose to force this individual to back off with violence, that is a rebellion. This of course is a very small scale rebellion or resistance, but nonetheless, it is what it is.
The Taiping Rebellion targeted the Qing dynasty, while the Boxer Rebellion supported it.

The term "rebellion" is generally used when referring to an uprising of citizens against an existing authority. For example, in 1860, many southern states engaged in a rebellion against the federal government of the United States (the entity holding political authority at the time). A "resistance" normally refers to citizens or combatants who rise up to oppose an occupying force. For example, in the 1980's, an Afghan resistance emerged to oppose the occupying forces of the Soviet Union. Therefore, rebellion's seek to challenge native authority, while a resistance stands in opposition to an invading force that has imposed authority.
