== == No. A second cousin is a person of your genealogical generation who is descended from at least one of your great grandparents. A cousin who is once removed is a cousin (first, second third, or more) who is one generation closer to or further from the common ancestor that you share than you are. Thus the children of your aunts and uncles are your first cousins. They are all descended from at least one of your grandparents. A child of your first cousin is also descended from at least one of your grandparents as the youngest common ancestor, but is one generation further from that ancestor than you are. So that child is your first cousin, once removed.

A second cousin and a cousin once removed are notthe same thing.

Your second cousin is the grandchild of the brother or sister of one of your grandparents.

Your first cousin, once removed is the child of your first cousin (the grandchild of the brother or sister of one of your parents) or the first cousin of one of your parents (the grandchild of the brother or sister of one of your grandparents.)

The relationships become more complex to describe when you get into second cousins once removed, third cousins once removed and more distant relationships.

The two terms describe two different relationships.

Your first cousins are the children of your aunts and uncles.

Your second cousins are the grandchildren of your grandparents' brothers and sisters.

You have two kinds of first cousins, once removed.

  1. The child of the brother or sister of one of your grandparents is your first cousin, once removed. This person is first cousin to one of your parents.
  2. The child of your first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is the grandchild of the brother or sister of one of your parents.

Someone is your second cousin if one of their parents and one of yours are first cousins (i.e. have common grandparents). Someone is your first cousin once removed if they are the child of one of your first cousins. The number of "removed's" refers to the difference in the number of generations from a common ancestor. Thus, you are also a first cousin once removed to your parents' cousins, since you are three generations from your great grandparent and your parents' cousins are only two.

Genealogically, it looks like this:

Great-Grandparent

/ \

Your Grandparent Great-aunt/uncle

/ \ \

Your parent Your aunt/uncle Your parent's cousin

/ \ \

You Your First cousin Your Second Cousin

\

Your first cousin, once removed

Your first cousin, once removed is either:

  1. the child of your first cousin, or
  2. the parent of your second cousin

Which one it is depends on which generation the two of you are in.

If two people are second cousins, they are each the grandchild of two people who were siblings (brothers or sisters).
