An altricial animal is an animal that requires a long period of development, and a heavy investment of parental energy, to achieve mature status. Human beings, for example, are altricial animals. Humans are helpless at birth, and must undergo a long period of "adolescence" before they can function as mature adults. Skills necessary for survival, such as language, are not instinctive, but must be mastered over an extended period. Other animals, such as deer, birds, bears, rabbits, etc., are relatively precocial. They emerge from the womb more or less ready to function in the world, with little or no parental investment necessary. Learning and nurturing plays a greater role in the development of altricial animals, while instinct plays a greater role in the development of precocial animals.
