Individuals with mental illness can also have MR, but many do not. Consider MR a developmental disorder of childhood that extends into adulthood. Mental illness can be severe, moderate, or mild and not interfere with learning, social adaptation, or IQ. Mental illness is a biological condition, while MR is a developmental disorder.
