Both are dialects of the Persian language (spoken mainly in Iran). Dari is the name of the Orthodox dialect which retains the classical Persian alphabet, grammar, and spelling rules. Farsi has more speakers, and while comparable to Dari, has altered some of its spelling rules and letters.

The Farsi dialect commonly spoken in Afghanistan is called Dari (Eastern Persian), or Farsiy e Dari (فارسی دری).
Dari is a dialect of Farsi.However, the difference between the two is similar to Afrikaans and Dutch: people from both group can understand each other easily despite differences.
A sizable proportion of the people of Afghanistan speak Dari as a first or second language, Dari being a dialect of Farsi. There are also minority populations such as the "Farsiwan" community that speak more Iranian-style Farsi.
