In sunni Islam there is no such thing as a Mullah but the word can be used to describe an imam in some parts of the world. an Imam leads the prayer. In the Shia religion a mullah is the man who leads the prayer and is educated in Islam. An imam is not someone who leads the prayer but a group of 12 religios leaders that were alive 1400 years ago. You might of heard of Imam Khomeini, he is not regarded as an imam but it is used just for respect.

Generally, both a Mullah and an Imam are religious leaders who can read, recite, and interpret the Quran, as well as lead the people in prayer. They are both seen by the community as figures who can answer questions and possibly give advice regarding interpretation of the Quran. However, a Mullah is typically associated with the Sunni community, whereas an Imam is associated with the Shia. Imam can also be used as a term of respect for a person who is not considered an Imam by "trade". This information came to me from one of my coworkers, who is an Afghan Muslim.

There is no difference in imam and Imam, both refer to someone leading any of the prayer sessions (five obligatory daily prayer sessions). Capitalizing "i", though follows English grammar rule for a proper noun.
