Mental well being is a place of contentment within societal norms, i.e. if you like to do your dishes in your camo undies on Monday at 2 pm while smeared in jelly and whip cream and you stick cheerios to your body and it effects and harms no one but yourself AND makes you feel GOOD this could be attributed to eccentricity and though it may not be considered "normal" in the societal factor, it is still a place of mental well being and contentment, of course this is an extreme example. :) Mental Health PROBLEMS on the other hand are mostly neuroses that go beyond the world of eccentricities, though they can also be much more serious such as Bi polar disorder, schizophrenia etc. They effect you negatively and the people around you negatively as well, and cause you to act in non healthy and non beneficial ways in your life. Many people KNOW at a gut level that their fears or behaviors or feelings are "not right/irrational or causing unneeded stress and heartache", even if only mild. Everybody has bad days but when the behaviors continue for any length of time and are unable to be resolved alone it could be defined as a mental health PROBLEM.

They are the same thing. However, "psychological" might imply to some people that the problem was fairly minor, while "mental problem" has the connotation of a more serious disorder. In fact, however, there is no difference. Professionals do not use the term "problem" in any case. Dysfunction or disorder are normally used, along with "emotional" and "somatic" (of the body).

It's easier to understand the difference when you treat them as separate entities. Mental health is about mental wellness - we all have mental health. Mental illness is when someone is diagnosed with a mental disorder.
