Fairy Tales typically involve fantastical elements like magic and mythical creatures, and often have a moral or lesson. Folktales are traditional stories passed down orally within a specific culture or community, and may include legends, myths, or fables. While both genres contain elements of folklore, fairy tales often feature more whimsical or magical elements.

The three gradate into each other and even evolve up the scale from folk-tale to legend to myth.

* A folk-tale recounts an incident that may or may not have happened but has a definite cultural bias and time / place orientation. Usually they have a strong plot. * A legend recounts a significant event that probably has a strong basis in fact, in centered round a definite hero. The conquests of Alexander the great.

* A myth involves Gods and world shaking events that attempt to explain natural phenomena (the creation of the world, sexual dimorphism)
