Photojournalism is a special kind of journalism. While journalism itself involves the reporting of news (whether in print or on TV, radio, or the internet), photojournalism refers to the taking of pictures (photographs, videos, illustrations), usually to enhance a news story. Many reporters, especially in print, have relied on what used to be called the "press photographer" to take the right pictures that will make an impact in the story. Some photojournalists have also broken news: there are several famous images during the Vietnam War, one of which showed children running in pain from a Napalm attack and another showed a prisoner being shot in the head. These photos shocked Americans and helped to change public opinion about the war. Today, in our visual world, words alone will often not move the public the way a picture or an illustration will. Thus, photojournalism remains very important in the reporting of news.
