Definitions

A 'Sect' identifies a smaller religious group as an 'breakaway group' within the larger, commonly more established religion. Sects will still have many things in common with their original 'church,' however, there will commonly be some fundamental differences in the rules and principles. There are thousands of 'sects' with the two biggest denominations of Christianity.

A 'Denomination' is a recognized religious group with its own distinctive faith, or 'creed' or central beliefs. Commonly, a denomination has existed for many years and usually operates as world-wide congregations, fostering a common set of beliefs, traditions or identities. In Christianity, both the Catholic and Protestant churches would be considered denominations due to their many years of tradition within their beliefs.

Denominations are branches of a certain religion. An example would be Catholicism being a denomination of christianity, or pentecostal, baptist, or evangelical. It's like a more specific answer then just saying christianity.

What are some branches of islam?

Answer 1Technically speaking, Islam has no branch. There are different sects among the Muslims, as you find among the Jews and the Christians. The basic beliefs are the same, but there may be a slight difference in interpretation of rules.Answer 2Islam has several major sects. The two most important (representing 99% of all Muslims) are Sunni Islam and Shiite Islam. The major difference between these two sects initially was the right to leadership (should it be vested in those most capable or those closest to Mohammed's bloodline). Eventually, they became more distinct, especially as concerns eschatology. Additionally, within the sects of Sunni and Shiite Islam are individual schools which have much more minor differences. The minor sects of Islam include the Ibadi sect, the extinct Mu'atazilite and Khawarijite sects, and the controversial/heretical (depending on your opinion) Ahmadi Sect.
