In olden days of yore plaster was applied over wooen lath which gave the plaster something to adhere to . Thus a much heavier coat of plaster could be applied because of the space between the lathes. the next day a second coat was applied called the skim coat because it's only purpose was to fill in the imperfections left from the first coat. fast forward to now the plaster comes in sheets much the same as sheetrock ex cept it is blue, and rightly called blueboard , after the hangers screw the bluboard to the wall and ceiling a team of plastererscome in and put a skim coat of plaster over the whol board, the joints require a heavier coat. After this coat dries in a couple of hoursor less the plasterers come back and apply a veneer thickness to the wall and dampen the plaster with a brush being waved in front of the board. Thus completing the plaster job. Now a oldtime plasterer like my brother-in-laws brother is a real plasterer and I was lucky enough to have him plaster my house when we built it, would walk off a job if they wanted him to use blueboard., as he is a old time plasterer who is an artist as he makes crown mouldings an other plaster designs on top of a coulple of inches thick.of base plaster. if you get a chance to see a real plaster job and a blueboard job you can tell the difference and both shine over sheetrock and compound job.

What is a SKIM key?

SKIM is an acronym for Sentry Key Immobilizer Module. It is Chrysler's design for a factory anti-theft system. In a vehicle equipped with a SKIM system, the engine will not start without the proper key that has been programmed to the SKIM, which transmits the information to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).

Can you skim coat over gloss paint?

Assuming you are using a dye-based spray on stain, yes, if the gloss is already set up and scuffed! However, while spraying or applying, gloss is too wet/tacky to work with between coats! As I do at work using Acrylic Polyurethane paints onto cabinet parts, your best bet is to apply a first coat of satin, stain over that, then a final coat of satin to seal the stain! (NEVER apply gloss over an unsealed dye based stain, as the heavy material will have a tendency to pull your stain and make the color look uneven!) As soon as the satin is flashed off (10-30min, depending on paint and temp.) you can apply your gloss. This is the method we have used for decades on HIGH quality cabinets!

Can you paint over wallpaper successfully?

Are you planning to paint over the wallpaper? Make sure there are no loose ends or bubbles in the paper. Latex flat or satin paint will work but you will see the seams in the wallpaper and the paint may cause the paper to lift off the wall. Better to remove the paper first for the best look and most durability. I had to paint over paper and decided to texture the wall first with a skim coat of plaster. Doesn't look bad but a LOT of work!

What kind of paint do you use to paint a skim board?

I would use a good hard enamel like Tremclad (available in Home Depot) and if you're painting a design on it I'd protect that with a good clearcoat.

What is the difference between cement based and lime based skim coat?

Lime Based Skim coat (LSC) is made with lime in various formulation and there is no standard formulation. The same consists of mainly lime, oil and several other igredients which changes from place to place. Cement based Skim coat on the other hand is factory made and contains Cement as Binder along with Filler and Additive to support various properties. The basic difference between Lime Based Skim Coat and Cement Based are that the Lime Based Skim Coat are not water resistant and cannot be applied externally, whereas cement based Skim Coat(CSC) can be applied interiors as well as exteriors. They are water resistant. The adhesion strength of the CSC is much higher than LSC. CSC being cement based becomes an integral part of the base plaster hence the durability is very high. LSC on the other hand cannot tolerate any moisture and gets peeled off in contact with the moisture. The Skim Coats are generally done as a base coat for paints and the CSC provide a firm base for the paints. The CSC can be made water resistant which results in lower consumption of Paint by around 20%. The initial cost of application of CSC is slightly higher than the LSC which is compensated by the lesser paint consumption and becomes lower as no primer is required after application of the CSC. For any further information on the properties of the CSC if required I can be contacted in the following email ID: sumonc@adityabirla.com
