Whether or not the black plague and the Bubonic Plague are the same disease or not is a source of contention among scholars and scientists alike. Lack of efficient record-keeping and unified terminology among Europe is what shrouds this question in mystery.

Those that support the hypothesis that the two plagues are separate argue that they have separate symptoms, claiming that the bubonic plague causes the bubo glands(in your armpits, neck, and groin area to swell forming buboes, while the black death can also cause necrosis of the fingertips and toes.

Others say that one of the plagues is a form of the other.

Some say the two unfortunate diseases are the absolute same.

Some experts believe that the symptoms reported of the Black Death sufferers are more consistent with Ebola than bubonic plague.

Not technically.

The Bubonic Plague happened at the same time as the Black Death because the Bubonic Plague is a type of form of the Black Death. There was another plague during the Black Death called the Pneumonic Plague-if you wanted to know that. The Black Death (AKA Septicemic Plague) is a rare form (and the most famous in the Medieval Ages (Dark Ages) of Bubonic Plague. The Bubonic Plague has buboes (hence the name) due to the infected places on your body. Here are the symptoms of the Bubonic Plague:

1. Chills

2. Fever

3. Vomiting

4. Diarrhea

5. The formation of buboes (This is where The Plague is called Bubonic Plague)

Here is the sysmptoms of the Septicemic Plague (AKA "the" Black Death):

1. Fever

2. Chills

3. Abdominal pain

4. Coughing/vomiting blood

5. Red or black patchy rash on skin (This is where you get the nickname "Black Death".)

6. Bumps on skin, resembling insect bites

Septicemic Plague is a form of Bubonic Plague in which the bacilli are present in the bloodstream and cause toxemia (or blood poisoning).

Here are the symptoms of the Pneumonic Plague:

First signs are:

1. Fever

2. Headache

3. Weakness and rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, and sometimes bloody or watery sputum.

When these signs begin the symptoms can often include:

1. Fever

2. Weakness

3. Headache

Rapidly developing pneumonia with:

1. Shortness of breath

2. Chest pain

3. Cough

4. Bloody or watery sputum (saliva and discharge respiratory passages)

All in all, the Septicemic Plague (AKA "the" Black Death) is an infection of the bloodstream, the Bubonic Plague is an infection of the buboes or lymph nodes, and Pneumonic Plague is an infection of the lung(s).

Hope this helps!
