A world of difference but with a common theme as the book is very loosely based on the novel. In the book Ben Richards volunteers to be on a "game show" to provide money for his family (wife and sick child) and is chosen to be in "The Running Man". In the movie Ben is an ex-cop that is framed and forced to be on the "show". In the movie Killian, as portrayed by Richard Dawson, is the host of the show. In the book Killian is the game show executive.

In the book the runner gets to go anywhere in the world with a twelve hour leeway and is required to tape himself for ten minutes twice each day and drop those tapes in the mail to the game show. The "hunters" are not as flamboyant as the ones in the movie.

If you have read the book, the differences are very obvious. I personally dislike the movie because it leaves out some very important scenes and most of the rest were cut short and modified to the degree where the movie was extremely loosely based on the book. If you really want to see the differences, read the book then watch the movie. Things are usually better that way, anyways.

The differences between the book and the film are plentiful. Of course the basic plot-line is intact, though I must confess to preferring the film, maybe it's bias since I saw it first. The film was far more emotional, but then I know books are generally not as appealing in that category as films are. I just found the novel less attached, and though I felt for Jack, I didn't like him as much as I like Dustin Hoffman's portrayl of him. Perhaps, there is a bit of dislikeness even towards Jack Crabb of the book evident in my view.

One thing that disappointed me was the focus on Jack's time amongst the whites. I always felt Little Big Man was meant to be a story about the natives, though in total Jack spends more time amongst the Americans, in fact, there's a certain span in the story between the Waschita River massacre and the Little Big Horn that bored me. Truly, the narrative drove me right in and though it it a long book spanning over 400 pages it reads like a short story, I found myself zooming through it. As I said though, certain parts did drag on and bore me.

There are many ways a book and a movie based on it can differ. In some cases, the only similarity is the title and the names of some of the characters. Even the title may be changed if the book is not well known. One other hand, some movie adaptations are a faithful dramatization of the book, even using the same dialogue and showing the setting of the book. As a rule, a book is longer than a movie can be, so the movie version shows only a portion of the book's story. Some movies are spoof or take-offs of a book. Sometimes the setting will be entirely different - for example a book set in the 19th century may lead to a movie set in modern times.

You read a book and you watch a movie. A movie that derives from a book is usually a bit different than the book itself.

In the original novel by Winston Groom Forrest was not nearly as successful as he is in the film. Life was not as kind to the Forrest in the book.
