There are many differences. An important one is cost. Community colleges are significantly less expensive per credit hour than public or private four-year schools. Tuition can be in the range of one-third that of a public university, and one-tenth that of a private university.

Also, selectivity. Community colleges are almost always open admissions. In other words, anyone who has a high school diploma will be admitted.

Community colleges specialize in serving live-at-home students and part-time students. They are ideal for students who want to further their educations while balancing work and family

Community colleges do not offer four-year baccalaureate degrees. They have a two-year curriculum that typically terminates with an associate's degree. Shorter programs may lead to specific professional certifications. Many students transfer from community colleges to four-year colleges.

A Community College is a public two-year college. Community Colleges are open enrollment, which means that a high school diploma or G.E.D is all that's required to be accepted. Community Colleges also offer other courses as a benefit to the area it serves such as ESL or G.E.D courses. The highest degree offered by most Community Colleges are Associates Degrees, though some schools may offer Bachelors Degrees for certain majors per the law in the state where the college is located. Community Colleges are feeder schools for the state universities, so Community Colleges must get permission from the state or universities to offer any Bachelors Degree course. Lastly, as public two-year colleges, the price of tuition for two years of schooling is very inexpensive, which means little to no student loan debt.

Universities are either public, private, non-profit or for-profit. Universities are four-year schools where the basic degree offered is the Bachelors Degree. Some universities offer Associates Degrees, but unlike Community Colleges, they need no permission to do so. Some universities offer Master's or Doctoral programs as well. There are some universities that do not offer no more than a Bachelors Degree. Some Universities offer room and board others are commuter campuses like Community Colleges. At major universities there will be lecture halls where classes are held, at others the class size are no bigger than that of a Community College. Lastly the cost of tuition is more than that of Community College, so the average student will graduate from a university with debt.

These are two separate issues. A community college offers two year degrees (associate degrees), and also shorter term certificate and diploma programs.

Accreditation of schools validates that the institution is meeting the appropriate standards as defined by the accreditation agency, of which there are different types.
