Of course there is a big overlap but in general comput…er science handles the technical working of computers whilst IT is concerned more with information manipulation and the business requirements 2. I think that computer science is concerned with the principles and concepts that are behind the emergence of IT. In other words, CS is academic studying of the S/W and H/W concepts but IT may have specific purposes to be studied. 3. From a very broad perspective, Computer Science is the study of the principles of computing. It helps you better understand how computers solve problems, the kinds of problems that a computer can solve and how one would present a problem to a computer. Abstract ideas that rely on fundamental mathematical theories are at the heart of Computer Science. Information Technology is the study of technology that drives Information Systems for businesses. Understanding how technology/tools can best meet the Information management needs of an organization is at the heart of IT. 4. As a computer Scientist migrated towards Information Technology I can say that a computer science is the study of computer's design and operation. But Information Technology is the use of the computer for a specific purpose without knowing the details of how the computer is carrying on all these tasks. 5. First you have to understand the differences between science, engineering & technology. Science is a systematic & specialized way of thinking.A scientist thinks & makes principles & hypothesis. The basis of Science is the conducting of experiments. Basically, a theory is made (stated), analysis and testing are performed with the use of various controls, and when a specific, measurable result occurs, and can be reproduced or proven time and time again, the theory then becomes Scientific law, or a truism of sorts. Technology, refers generally to items of use, created from "Applied Science". A good example of this is the production of Solar panels. Solar Panels are used in a variety of different technologies, but the simplest example is a Solar Powered Calculator. It was proposed long ago that the Sun emits 2 types of energy, heat energy and light energy. The Sun's heat energy is what warms the Earth's atmosphere so that life as we know it can exist, by warming the atmosphere to a tolerable temperature that the Human Body can function in. (Space is somewhere around -230 degrees Fahrenheit, and at those temperatures, plants could not grow, and the Human body would not be able to carry on normal functions such as breathing in that cold of temperature.) The sun's light energy is absorbed by Solar Panels (and Solar Cells), and converts that energy to electricity so that the calculator can perform mathematical functions. To test this, put a piece of electrical tape over your calculator for 15 minutes, and then see if you can turn it on. If you can't then you know the light energy is being converted to electricity. In brief: Science is the study of forces and interactions between different "things", both animate and inanimate. Technology can be referred to as things which we make, but were developed by applying Scientific law, knowing what such "things" are capable of doing. Science is the understanding of nature. Technology is the application of that understanding to practical things.

Technology is another general term that refers to anything that is mechanical and electrical and complicated in its design. Most people understand it to mean something that involves a computer. Invention is something that is designed by a scientist or engineer. The best inventions usually use new Technology and has computer in the design. (Example: the new cars have a computer that helps save gas mileage.) Any invention can be considered new technology. The first person to use a Wheel had invented new technology. A rocking chair was considered a new idea and therefore an invention.

Technology is the application of knowledge although many technological advancements have occurred as a result of serendipity or an accidental application of facts that were previously unknown or misunderstood and sometimes still unknown and misunderstood. Thus technological advancements sometimes precede knowledge acquired through methods accepted by the scientists in an effort to explain phenomena. The time line required by humans to apply knowledge to technology varies tremendously and cannot be calculated or tabulated because it depends on a multitude of variables, some of which are related while some not related at all. When humans have more time or incentives to be creative, technology advances more quickly. When humans are repressed through tyranny, laws or by a constant need to find shelter, food and society, then the rate of technological advancement slows. A single invention can speed technologically tremendously. For example, the discoveries of electricity and electromagnetism and the theory of how sound moves in waves through air were applied by the inventor of the electric speaker, who applied his knowledge of scientific facts and theories. Electromagnetic speakers, microphones and headphones made much additional technology available in short order: radios, telephones, talking pictures, megaphone, walkie talkies, computer speakers, cell phones, etc.
