Active Duty sends you after a short while of time to a certain place after training. While Reserves sends you after a certain time depending on how long you signed up. [ex. My brother signed up for 4 years, hes had training and after the 3rd year he goes to Iraq for the last year then he is free.]

The National Guard works for the Governor of the state in which they serve. They can be mobilized in the event of an emergency such as a riot or natural disaster. They can also be mobilized by the President of the United States during times of National emergency (such as the war in Iraq).

Army Reservists work for the President of the United States and can only be mobilized by the him (or her).

If you join the regular Air force you serve for 4 years after Basic training. If you join the reserves, you go to Basic training and then to go home and attend meetings and training on weekends once a month. Then for a few weeks during the summer you are active at an Air Force Base. Your commitment is for 7 years. You are eligible to be called up at any time at a moments notice and be shipped off to where you are needed for as long as you are needed.

The difference between night and day, if you want the short version.

There are four components of the Army, and three of those are currently in place - the Regular Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard.

When most people refer to "Army", they usually think of the Regular Army, which is a full-time, active duty force of professional soldiers. They soldier 24/7 - they don't do anything else.

The Army Reserve is composed of part-timers. They drill one weekend a month, and do two weeks (give or take) of annual training. My personal observation is that soldiers from Reserve components - especially those who don't have prior active service - tend to be lacking in proficiency and standards of discipline. However, the Army Reserve does have some strong points. Transportation units in the Army Reserve tend to have a large number of personnel who are professional drivers in civilian life, and put in much more time behind the wheel than their Regular Army counterparts. Military Police units often have large numbers of personnel who are civilian police officers in normal life, and have experience in actual police work, as opposed to Military Police of the Regular Army, whose cantonment area policing duties have been taken over by the DOD Police, and lack the investigative experience of a civilian police officer.

Another major difference is that the Army Reserve is not composed of combat arms units - the reserve force of combat arms soldiers (infantry, cavalry, armour, artillery, etc.) is the Army National Guard. The Army Reserve has only one such unit - the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regiment, which is based in Hawaii, and is composed of members from Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariannas Islands.

What is the difference between the army national guard and the national guard or is there any?

There are actually two National Guards, but when people say the National Guard they are probably (but not necessarily) talking about the Army National Guard. The other National Guard is the Air National Guard which is to the Air Force what the Army National Guard is to the Army.

Is 'national guard' capitalized?

If you are referring to the U.S. Army and Air Force reserves, yes, they are known as the "National Guard." Actually U.S. Army Reserve and Air Force Reserve are federal reserve forces. Air and Army National Guard are state forces that can be federalized by the President.

Is 42 to old to join the National Guard?

You really need to speak with a National Guard recruiter about that. As the National Guard is a separate component from the Regular Army and Army Reserve, individual states do have some say in things such as age limits, and they may vary between states.

How does the military affect the national guard?

The National Guard serves as a reserve component of two federal forces - the Army (Army National Guard), and Air Force (Air National Guard). Policies, procedures, etc. adopted by these branches are subsequently adopted by their National Guard components.

Which is better air force reserve or air National Guard?

Without getting too technical, the basic difference is that the Air Force Reserve is the reserve forces for the active Air Force, and the Air National Guard is specifically attached to one state. The governor of the respective state is the commander in chief for their guard. The same goes for the Army. Both the Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard ARE part of the Air Force. The reserve is federal while the guard is state. Both wear name tapes that state U.S. Air Force on their uniforms.
