If you take the train, again you first have to take a bus into the city centre to Waverly Station. The train takes about an hour fifteen, but then you have to take a bus from Leuchar's train station to St. Andrews, which is another 20 minutes. There is no train station in St. Andrews.
The Exchange Street station is pretty far from the airport; it's probably about 20 - 30 minutes from the airport. However, the Depew station is about 5-10 minutes from the airport. It's literally right down the road - about 1 - 2 miles. If it's an option, select the Depew station.
