For the Ford 4.9 litre / 300 cubic inch inline six cylinder engine :
The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE
The firing order is ( 1 - 5 - 3 - 6 - 2 - 4 )
The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces AWAY from the engine
The engine cylinders are numbered 1 to 6 , from front to rear
counterclockwise
That would depend on which engine you have in your Ford Ranger , a 4 cylinder or a 6 cylinder . The 4 cylinder engines used in the Ford Ranger have a firing order 1 - 3 - 4 - 2 and the distributor rotates clockwise . All the 6 cylinder engines used in a Ford Ranger have a firing order 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6 and if they have a distributor the rotation is clockwise
clockwise 1 - 5 - 3 - 6 - 2 - 4 The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces AWAY from the engine
On a Ford V6 engine : clockwise ( unless it's the 3.8 liter V6 engine which has the distributor at the front of the engine , that one is counterclockwise ) On a Ford inline ( straight ) six cylinder the distributor rotor turns clockwise
You will need a reverse rotation cam and lifters, reverse rotation front a rear main seals, reverse rotation distributor, and a reverse rotation starter.
For a Mercury / Ford 3.0 liter V6 engine : ( the distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE )
The distributor cap is on top of the distributor which is on the driver's side of the engine ( where the spark plug wires connect ) on the Ford 4.9liter / 300 cubic inch straight six cylinder engine

The V8 engines and the 3.8 liter V6 engine have the distributor in front The other size V6 engines have the distributor at the rear The straight 6 cylinder engine has the distributor on the drivers side
