The domain of a function is the range of input values it can take for a given variable. For the function

y = (x+2)/(x-5),

the domain is the range of values that x can take. In this case, x can take any real value except 5. If x = 5, then y= 7/0 and is thus undefined. Using set notation to express this, we would say

{x??, x?5},

i.e. x is an element of the set of real numbers, x is not equal to 5.
