Male teachers should dress conservatively, but suits are not necesssary. Khakis or brown slacks and a collared shirt or a sweater will do. Louder printed ties or exposed chest hair can also make a teacher look inapppropriate for a class and distract from a lesson. Long facial hair is not a good idea. Female teachers should not wear very revealing outfits or loud, outrageous styles, as it will distract from their lessons. They should aim to dress fashionably and not look frumpy. Teachers should NOT aim to dress like their students. They should also dress according to age. Younger teachers can get away with looking trendier in the classrooms, and older teachers should dress more conservatively. Casual jeans aren't appropriate for the classroom. Lighter washes of jeans, bellbotoms, tapered jeans, distressed jeans, jeans with sandblasts (fades) or cuffed jeans would be better for knocking around at home or getting groceries in. Good shoes are notoptional.
Each school should have a policy for what teachers are expected to wear. Some might want their teachers to wear casual business type attire, some might allow jeans, and others might have other policies. Whatever the policy is, that is what you should go by.
Most school districts have an unwritten dress code for teachers. Teachers are adults and teaching is a professional job, so the people who teach know how to dress for the job. How a teacher looks is part of the teacher evaluation process. The basic dress code is to look good with a sporty/dressy casual look, nothing too short (pants, skirts), tops are to be buttoned and respectable, and shoes can be anything from heels to sandals.
Yes, they do. According to my form teacher in school, they actually have dress codes. This is why you do not see teachers wearing pyjamas to school.

The teachers have to show a good example and look professional, and this is better done with a dress code. Too much casual dress detracts from the teachers' professionalism.
