I had a neighbor who used home heating fuel in his old Mercedes 300 sedan with no problems, according to him. I suspect that in this day with all the folks watching over us and making sure we don't hurt ourselves on sharp objects you will be spied upon by a jealous neighbor and arrested by Homeland Security and charged with some thing like "Failure to KowTow to Big Oil and the Environazis .. see, both camps will get ya for it ... Home Heating Fuel is essentially #2 Fuel Oil and similar to Diesel fuel. The only real difference between #2 Diesel and #2 "Fuel Oil" is that there is a dye added to the "legal Diesel" which makes it easy for the Jackboots to identify fuel as "taxed" and "non-taxed". This is usually called "Off-Road" and "On-Road" fuel. Off-Road Fuel is like what you use in your tractor, your generator (to keep the lights and the electric fences up when the FBI cuts the commercial power to your compound because you are leader of a small "sect" of Christians, etc (you know the drill by now ... ) On-Road fuel is what is sold by the various service stations. Off-Road fuel's most important aspect is that it is not taxed for vehicle use; so right there the State and Local goose-steppers will be after you; Next, it is not taxed by the Federal Gubmint, so the Federals will be after you faster than you can say "Waco and Ruby Ridge". Next, there is a possibility of soot particulate emission above that of the present day "approved" Diesel fuel, so the Environazis, the Sierra Klub, and the various Comrades of the Left will be after you. You will be lucky to stay alive after the Federal Trade Commission SWAT Team kicks in your door at 3am some morning. Oh, guess what, they have already done that a few times plus arresting folks driving over the border to Mexico and buying Diesel for $1.00 a gallon. Yep .. Bin Laden could come across the border and bring a Nuke with him but you can't buy 10 gallons of Diesel in T.J. these days. Finally, I imagine that comments such as mine and descriptions about how to run your vehicle on non-traditional fuels will be a death-penalty offense Real Soon Now. California has already taken steps in the state senate to ban "bio-Diesel", the addition of kerosene to Diesel, the use of home/farm manufactured Butane and Methane in pressure tanks for pre-ignition burning in Diesels (to double your fuel mileage), and the use of certain types of water injectors (similar to those used in jet fighters for afterburner boost), which add power and increase mileage. See, it is all about control, control of the ignorant "Joe Six-Pack". The Leftist Elite are all about control. And it comes around as simply as whether your Diesel car has fuel which has a dye additive or not. Think about it next time you vote for some Leftie Liberal, althrough IMHO it is already too late. You had to show ID last time you bought shotgun shells, didn't ya, huh? huh? huh? Now WHO do you think has your name and address now.

Well, that was a fairly informative rant. Stove oil does not have the lubricity that diesel fuel does, it will beat up injectors and other fuel system components.

As far as I know the basic differences between On Road (dyed to show taxes have been paid), Off Road (farm equipment, etc.) and Home Heating Oil is sulfur content. Ultra Low, Low and High respectively. My question is what is the difference in flash point,if any?

Yes, I do rant when it comes to the invidiousness of Big Government. Anyway the discussion continues with this helpful chart from the Wiki on Flash Points:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_point

Of interest is the fact that Diesel is >62°C (143°F) and "Biodiesel" is >130°C (266°F). Here is some information about the various categories of diesel-like oils:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel

I find interesting that nowhere on the Internet was I able to find an actual article or reference to the "illegal" use of the various categories of light flammable oils. Now, I am not saying that the White and Doble Company's Steam Engine Automobiles were suppressed by that famous fan of Hitler, Henry Ford, BUT, it does seem a mite strange. Well perhaps folks worry about that knock on the door at 3am by the Environmental Protection Agency SWAT boys.

Here is what the Wiki had to say about being fined and/or arrested:

TaxationDiesel fuel is very similar to heating oil which is used in central heating. In Europe, the United States, and Canada, taxes on diesel fuel are higher than on heating oil due to the fuel tax, and in those areas, heating oil is marked with fuel dyes and trace chemicals to prevent and detect tax fraud. Similarly, "untaxed" diesel (sometimes called "off road diesel") is available in the United States, which is available for use primarily in agricultural applications such as fuel for tractors, recreational and utility vehicles or other non-commercial vehicles that do not use public roads. Additionally, this fuel may have sulphur levels that exceed the limits for road use using the newer 2007 standards. This untaxed diesel is dyed red for identification purposes,[20] and should a person be found to be using this untaxed diesel fuel for a typically taxed purpose (such as "over-the-road", or driving use), the user can be fined US$10,000. In the United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands it is known as red diesel (or gas oil), and is also used in agricultural vehicles, home heating tanks, refrigeration units on vans/trucks which contain perishable items (e.g. food, medicine) and for marine craft. Diesel fuel, or Marked Gas Oil is dyed green in the Republic of Ireland. The term DERV ("diesel engined road vehicle") is used in the UK as a synonym for unmarked road diesel fuel. In India, taxes on diesel fuel are lower than on gasoline as the majority of the transportation that transports grains and other essential commodities across the country runs on diesel.

In Germany, diesel fuel is taxed lower than gasoline but the annual vehicle tax is higher for diesel vehicles than for gasoline vehicles.[citation needed] This gives an advantage to vehicles that travel longer distances (which is the case for trucks and utility vehicles) because the annual vehicle tax depends only on engine displacement, not on distance driven. The point at which a diesel vehicle becomes less expensive than a comparable gasoline vehicle is around 20,000 km per year (12,500 miles per year) for an average car.[citation needed]

Taxes on biodiesel in the United States vary from state to state and in some states (Texas, for example) have no tax on biodiesel and a reduced tax on biodiesel blends equivalent to the amount of biodiesel in the blend, so B20 fuel is taxed 20% less than pure petrodiesel.[21] Other states, such as North Carolina, tax biodiesel (in any blended configuration) the same as petrodiesel, although they have introduced new incentives to producers and users of all biofuels.[22]

My friend -- who prefers to be called "Clem" and who is an expert mechanic -- with certificates from various manufacturers to prove it, plus the paycheck he gets for rebuilding commercial stationary engines (like big generator engines) told me this morning (after he read this whole thread, at my behest, " ... the answer to your question is short and simple: There ain't no difference except what folks want to make of it ... use the cheapest oil you can find and every tank of about 20 gallons, pour in a quart of cheap-ass kerosene. Done deal my friend ..."

Are catalytic converters required on diesel cars?

From 1994 onwards, they were required to have a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst. From 2008 onwards (in the US), a set of emissions standards requiring highway diesel engines to have a Diesel Particulate Filter went into effect. From 2012 onwards, engines over a certain displacement required a complete aftertreatment system, with a DOC, DPF, and Selective Catalytic Reduction, which uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

Is a gasoline-diesel fuel a good mixture to get more power from a diesel engine?

not at all. that will cause engine damage. gasoline burns at a much lower temperature than diesel fuel so you will get pre ignition. diesel fuel has more useable power in than gasoline. gasoline is rated in octane and diesel fuel is rated in cetane. with diesel fuel the higher the cetane the faster the fuel will burn for a more complete combustion. so if you want more power from a diesel a place to start is a higher cetane diesel fuel. but things like bigger trubos, vgt turbos, injectors, intercoolers have a much bigger effect on power than fuel

What effect does biodiesel have on the environment?

An environmental benefit of using bio diesel as an additive to petroleum-based diesel is a reduction in harmful emissions such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes, which are responsible for the health hazards and pollution associated with combustion of petroleum-based fuels.

What effect is the diesel problem for owners of VW?

The "diesel problem" is an emissions problem affecting 2010 to 2015 cars with VW diesel engines. In 2010 the US government introduced very strict emission standards for diesel engines. VW was thinking about buying Mercedes' emission control technology but chose instead to invent their own. The one they invented didn't work so VW decided to program its cars to go into a special low-emission but low-performance mode if it detected a test was being run. They got caught. The cars have dirtier exhaust than allowed, but they'll run fine until VW figures out how to fix them and does it.

What is the effect of using High sulphur Diesel fuel?

They don't sell that anymore. There is Low Sulfur Diesel (less than 500ppm Sulfur) and Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (less than 15ppm Sulfur). If your vehicle says "ultra low sulfur diesel required" you have a diesel particulate filter. (You might also have a Selective Catalytic Reduction reactor or an Advanced EGR system if you have a 2010-on truck, but if so you also have a DPF.) You can run LSD in your engine occasionally--like if you need some fuel because you're about out of gas and there's nothing else around--but running LSD all the time in a newer truck will ruin the diesel particulate filter and they are not cheap.

Will your expedition work if by mistake you ran out of gas and put a gallon of diesel then you notice and then put a gallon of regular gasoline?

Fill the tank with gasoline to dilute the diesel fuel and you should be okay. You may notice a different smell coming out the exhaust until the diesel mix is used up. It may also effect performance until the mix is used up.
