The nitride ion, N3ˉ, has an electron arrangement of 1s2, 2s2, 2p6

The elemental nitrogen, N, has an electron arrangement of 1s2, 2s2, 2p3. Since the nitride ion, N3-, has 3 extra electons, those 3 extra electrons fill the 2p orbital giving the electron arrangement above. This stabilizes the nitride ion because it is similar to a noble gas.

Nitrogen has 7 electrons, 2 in the 1s orbital which take no part in the bonding, and 5 in th eouter shell. . Each hydrogen has just one electron. In ammonia, NH3 the central nitrogen forms 3 covalent bonds to the hydrogen atoms where there are two shared electrons one from the hydrogen and one from the nitrogen. In this way both elements achieve a noble gas outer shell.

The number of Valence electrons is the number of electrons found on the outermost electron shell of the atom. Nitrogen originally has 7 electrons, and so the N3- ion has 3 extra, giving it 10 electrons overall. We can then use this to write the electronic configuration as:

1s2 2s2 2p6

The valence electrons are the electrons in the outermost shell, in this case the 2nd shell. Simply add the 2 and the 6 together and you have 8, your answer.

To clarify, N3- has 8 valence electrons.
