that would be the cheetah and they can reach average speeds of 65-70 miles and hour in seconds and they cover 20-25 feet with each stride. they are also the only cat who's claws do not retract and nostrils are designed (made larger for more air flow) for their sprinting. they are a sprinter and can not keep up that speed for very long.

The fastest animal on land is the cheetah, but only over a short distance. If the prey runs fast or twists and turns enough, the cheetah has to stop or risk overheating. Even a lion chasing an antelope would give up after a certain time or distance has been reached. But, in the Kalahari Desert, the indigenous Bushmen have been known (on a BBC documentary) to have pursued an eland antelope buck for several days. Eventually the eland was too exhausted to go on, when the bushmen killed it. It fed the bushman's village for several days. So, in conclusion, a cheetah may be fast, but it is the stamina of the Kalahari Bushmen, and the stamina of a well trained, modern day marathon runner that proves stamina is often better than speed (sorry, pun coming in!) - in the long run.

How long did the fastest cat run?

The fastest cat is the cheetah... it's actually the fastest land animal of any kind. And it doesn't run for long, a few seconds at most. It's a sprinter, not a marathoner. If it doesn't catch its prey almost instantly, it gives up and waits for the next opportunity; it really doesn't have the endurance to run for long periods.
