Voltage regulator ensures a proper good quality voltage is applied to the ride on mower irrespective of the poor quality of input voltage. Of course voltage regulators have limitations too and work well with in a range of input voltage.

if you have a charging system you have to have a voltage regulator. if not the system will overcharge the battery and short it out/melt it down. you can run a total loss sytem which is what most road race bikes use. only problem is you have to charge the battery every time and you have a limited opperating time depending on what model it is
