due to the charging of capaitor with the rise in voltage and discharging of capacitor with the fall, the change voltage across it (which is also the ouput voltage of the rectifier) is gradual and not abrupt. So, if you put a capacitor with sufficient time constant (RC), the output of the rectifier will more or less be a steady DC voltage.

Without the capacitor, the waveform is the positive halves of the AC waveform. With the capacitor, and with no load, the waveform is a straight line DC at the peak value minus the diode's forward voltage drop.

Add some load, and the waveform become triangular, of sorts. Starting at the peak of the waveform, it will follow the AC waveform down until the slope of the line is greater than the current draw1 of the load, at which point the slope will become flat at that current draw. At this point, the diode turns off and only the capacitor is providing power. This continues while the AC continues down and then up, to the point where the rising AC waveform intersects the decreasing capacitor waveform. At this point, the diode turns back on, and the waveform follows the AC up and over the peak, where the cycle starts over again.

If the load is not constant current, i.e. it is dependent on voltage, such as a resistor, then the decaying part of the waveform (the part when the diode is off) will be exponential instead of linear. The size of the capacitor is chosen so that the minimum decay voltage is greater than the minimum required by the load. Often, the load is a regulator, and needs a headroom of 2 volts.
