The book Rules is about a girl named Catherine and her little brother David. David has Autism and does not understand the ways of life, so Catherine writes him rules in the back of her sketchbook for him! Some rules are things like: No toys in the fish tank and keep your pants on in public. Then Eventually Catherine has a next door neighbor moving in and the Family has a daughter around Catherine's age and she hopes she can have a next door neighbor Friend! Also she meets a boy named Jason who is in a wheelchair and has a speech book which is full of words for him to communicate with. Basically he taps words in the book to talk to people! Since Catherine likes to draw she Makes cards with new words on them for Jason! So Jason and Catherine become good friends! Kristi, that's Catherine's next door neighbor I mentioned about before, is hanging out with Catherine and I personally think Catherine is disappointed that Kristi is not like her other friends! Well then there is Jason's birthday party Catherine gets invited to and a dance Kristi helped decorate on the same day. Catherine decides to go to Jason's birthday party because she thinks she is not a good dancer and she only dances alone in her room or if it's pitch black! So later Catherine and Jason get into a little fight about that when he asked her to go with him and Catherine felt horrible about it! Jason's mom called and Catherine told her to tell Jason to meet her at the dance in a hour and she calls her dad out of work to take her to the dance! At this part of the book Catherine is really trying to rebuild a strong friendship with her and Jason and she finally meets Jason. Jason and her talk, then Kristi and Ryan [Ryan is a boy Kristi likes and Catherine really does not like because he jokes around with David a lot] and they are both shocked at how Jason is. Finally Jason makes Catherine dance. Lastly Catherine is back at home almost ready to go to bed and David has a toy in the fish tank so he went to get Catherine to get it out! She laughs and the have a brother and sister moment [they quote characters, frog and toad, cause Catherine likes the words he uses and tries to make David use words like that!] At the End Catherine knows she can't let David use other people's words any more, but it's like sharing something speacial with her brother is how she puts it!
