Stingrays like sharks are viviparous meaning they bear live young. An adult female stingray will only have one litter per year of 2-6 pups. The young are born able to feed and fend for themselves at almost half their adult weight, It is very important that the few young that are born survive so a great deal of energy is put into their rearing.
