Baumkuchen translated literally this is the tree cake. Called the Tree Cake because of the Layers that look like the rings of a tree. Actually it is quite easy except you must you must have a special or custom made apparatus to produce. See video of a cake being made.

Getting the moisture right gives me the most trouble. If you add too little water, the crust just crumbles when you try to roll it out. If you add too much, it becomes gummy and sticky. I've heard of a method where you chill the dough when it's made and get it very cold. Then you grate it on a grater and press the dough into the pie pan. This way you don't have to roll it out. I haven't tried it yet.

How do you make a cookie softer?

put it in the microwave If you mean how do you make a soft cookie, as opposed to a crispy cookie, the answer is to add more flour when you make the cookie dough. If you have more flour in the dough, it will be soft and chewy. If you have less flour and more butter/oil/fat of any kind, the cookie will be crispy and "snap" or break easily.
