What is the history of Morganton furniture?
Through an exchange of common stock, Drexel acquired control in January 1957 of the Morganton Furniture Co., a producer of case goods (a trade term for wooden bedroom and dining room furniture) and Heritage Furniture, Inc. of High Point and Mocksville, a manufacturer of upholstered furniture. Heritage became a wholly owned subsidiary of what became Drexel Enterprises Inc., and Morganton a division of Heritage. Both acquired companies continued to operate autonomously, producing and selling their own regular brand lines.

What is the history of Virginia Craftsmen Company that once had the license to reproduce the furniture in Monticello?
Founded in 1927 by Walter Zirkle, Sr., Virginia Craftsmen, Inc., manufactures and retailed high-quality antique reproduction furniture. Each Virginia Craftsmen antique re…production is crafted by hand. The artisans work from carefully preserved and irreplaceable original patterns, as well as precise drawings of the actual historic pieces. Only the finest solid, kiln-dried hardwoods- primarily cherry, walnut and mahogany-are used. Where historical style dictates, the finest crotched veneers are used. All inlays are hardwood, no plastics or softwoods. Virginia Craftsmen employs traditional techniques to assure complete authenticity. The dovetail and mortise and tenon are our basic forms of joinery. The turnings are done on a lathe with hand-held chisels that cut sharper detail than automatic machine production. The satin smooth finishes are the result of countless hours of hand rubbing. The glass panes in the cabinets are individually set, and all cabinet backs are made of solid wood… completely finished on both sides. Even in places most people would not examine-like the backs and undersides of drawers- all surfaces are completely finished, with the most meticulous detail carefully rendered. The H.E. Shaw furniture company in Grand Rapids Michigan was operated from 1911-1933. Depletion of Michigan's forests put an end to the logging industry, requiri…ng furniture companies to import lumber, as they still do today. Due to a nationwide industry slump between 1905 and 1910, furniture workers received only minimal raises or none at all. This, combined with extremely long hours and poor working conditions, led to 3,000 workers striking in 1911 demanding a 9-hour day, a 10 percent wage increase, and the abolition of pay based on piecework. After four months, the strike ended, but later management granted most of the laborer's requests. The Grand Rapids residential furniture industry never fully recovered after that strike. World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II led to lessening demand for residential furniture and the Grand Rapids furniture companies did not make the transition well during the war economies. Many companies went under or moved south to be closer to a larger lumber supply.

Ashley furniture is a company that sees a large number of sales. It could be inferred from this fact that the furniture is therefore popular and is generally considered to be …'nice'. The style of their furniture is often fairly traditional and is aimed at consumers on a budget, so it may not suit those seeking more modern and/or luxurious pieces.

Generally, "formalism" is an emphasis on the external form, neglecting the content of a thing. The value of the work lies in the form. The formalistic viewing art emph…asizes qualities such as composition, color, lines and texture. Content-related aspects such as theme, genesis of the work, historical context and biography of the artist, are secondary and are not treated. This perspective is adapted by the furniture industry. The term "formal furniture" is understood to mean rustic furniture in a variety of styles and with a variety of historical and contemporary influences.
