An island called Manna Hatta [Manhattan] by the Indians who inhabited it. In 1609, Henry Hudson, working for the Dutch West Indies Company in Amsterdam was asked to go find China or India, in order to expand the business of beaver skin trading. He found the island of many hills [translation of the Indian word manna hatta]. In 1624, the Dutch arrived. In 1720, the English took over and it was re-named New York. In 1776, New York won over the English and it became American owned. In 1883, the first bridge, The Brooklyn Bridge, was completed to the city of Brooklyn. In 1898, New York City became the five boroughs of NYC (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx). The first underground subway was complete in 1904.
When the Dutch arrived they originally meant for New Amsterdam (as they called it) to be an island of business; and for many years only inhabited the lower (Downtown) area of Manhattan.
