The kidney is a major organ in the lower section of the abdomen.
The kidney preforms 2 major tasks in the body one consisting of filtering the blood and the other is to distribute nutrients from what ever liquid you may drink to the rest of the body. The fluid waste leaves the kidneys through the ureters and into the bladder.
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs in the abdominal cavity that filters the blood, and regulates fluid and electrolyte balance, to ultimately form and excrete urine.
The structures from the outside in:
Thin capsule layer covering a thicker cortex. Then there are 6 renal pyramids evenly spaced from each other and the same distance from the capsule. Their corners are rounded, and the "point" is pointing toward the concave part of the kidney. From the "point" of each renal pyramid, the fluid is emptied into the minor calyx and then the major calyx, finally emptying into the renal pelvis, which is a wider space. The fluid leaves the kidney through the ureter to enter the bladder, and eventually pass through the urethra and exit the body.
Blood enters the kidney through the renal arteries that come directly from the abdominal aorta. Each renal artery branches into segmented arteries which branch into interlobar arteries which extend through the renal capsule and renal columns between the pyramids. The blood continues to the arcuate arteries that run the boundary of the cortex and medulla. The blood is filtered through the cortex, and the medulla portion of the renal pyramids. The waste is left behind to compose urea in the renal pelvis while the rest of the blood leaves the kidney through the renal vein.
