Mosques typically have a very simple layout. There is an entrance where people wash their hands, feet and faces. They also take off their shoes before entering. There is then one large room where the communal prayer takes place. Women typically pray in the back or along the side walls, while men pray front and center. All worshipers face towards the Imam who stands inside a mihrab (a carved archway). The position of the mihrab is determined by the direction to Mecca.
There are certainly more complex mosques with rooms for Imams and other individuals involved in maintaining the buildings, some have balconies, some have domed roofs while others are flat-roofed, and some have internal and external gardens while others do not.
