∙ 15y agoIgnoring mountains, and assuming the Earth is perfectly spherical, the equator's length is equal to the circumference of the Earth, or approximately 24,000 miles. As far as being "long", no other "straight" line on the surface of the Earth can be any longer without overlying a portion of itself, so, yeah, it's pretty long! Because the Earth rotates about its axis, its spherical form "bulges" at the equator. This also causes a slight "flattening" at the poles. This means that the longest distance around the Earth is along that equatorial bulge. The longitudinal meridians, pairs of which similarly circle the globe, will be correspondingly shorter. Each individual meridian of longitude is, of course, only one-half of the global circumference anyway.
