I cannot give actual percentages, but the success rate is very high. I know several people who have had by-pass surgery, one of whom had a quadruple bypass and the others triple bypass operations. All of them were extremely ill before surgery. One, in fact, had suffered a heart attack that was so bad that it was touch-and-go for quite a while. One is now running marathons, the rest of the triple bypass guys are all active and well, and the quadruple bypass guy (who had the surgery around 20 years ago) is still extremely active, and is still playing Golf at the age of 88.

Many factors will effect this.

  • What is actually going to be done in the heart operation: bypass, holes, leak valves, new valves, etc.
  • Patient's age, how bad the problem is, any other health issues, the experience of the doctor and hospital staff, etc.

2-3% of patients die within 30 days of surgery. Survival depends (and varies greatly) on the quality of the surgeon and hospital, so do your research.

There are a few sources for info on best heart hospitals:

  1. US News publishes an annual list of the "Top 50 Heart Hospitals"
  2. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) publishes detailed statistics on the performance of different hospitals in bypass surgery by state (probably a good indication of overall performance as a heart hospital)
  3. Consumer Reports publishes the STS information in a simplified way in their "Cardiac Bypass" reports area.

Bypass surgery has a success rate between 95-98 percent. That leaves two to five percent of bypass patients suffering from complications. The success rate of bypass surgery has increased over time and notable survivors include President Bill Clinton and David Letterman.
