The function of a subnet mask is to extract the network ID portion of an IP destination address and determine whether an IP address exists on the local network or whether it must be routed outside the local network
Main role of the Subnet mask is to give you the Subnet (network) address of your network. For a given I.P. (internet Protocol ) Address say of any class it can be divided into different smaller groups. For E.g. I.P. Address = 192.56.78.24 it is a class C address. Now Anding the I.P. address with given Subnet mask say 255.255.255.o gives you the network ID of the Address i.e. 192.56.78 . Note to making the Anding you need to convert both the address into their binary values and then AND them after that convert back to decimal value. 192 , 56, 78 , 24 should be separately converted.
A subnet mask sends messages to the computer. Its main function is to let the computer know which addresses are remote, and which are local.
A default subnet mask gives you classful addressing on octet boundaries. A non-default subnet mask implies that you are subnetting a larger network into several smaller ones.
255.0.0.0The default subnet mask of a class A network is 255.0.0.0
That is your subnet mask.
255.255.255.0
255.0.0.0
It does not require a subnet mask.
If this is a default subnet mask, then it would be a class C subnet mask. If you are subnetting a network and this is not the default subnet mask, then it could be either a class A or class B.
The default subnet mask has a standard size. The custom subnet mask allows you to make subnets that are smaller or larger than the default.
The correct term is subnet mask instead of subnet mass. A subnet mask separates an IP address into the host address and the network address. It is a 32-bit number that can mask an IP address.
2 given subnets
255.255.255.0
255.255.255.0
Subnet mask for the above is 255.0.0.0
The default subnet mask would be 255.255.0.0 for a class B address.
if the ip address is 192.168.2.1 then the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0
By changing subnet mask..from 255.255.224.0 to 255.255.240.0 Number of subnetworks increase and the number of host in each subnetwork decreases
It depends on whether you are subnetting or not. If not, the default subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0
