Which in a Phrase

"Which" is generally used as "that" in an adjective phrase.

Example : "The getaway car, which was found later, had been stolen." Example : "In the library, he found the book which held the secret spell."

The Use of Which in Questions

The use of the interrogative "which" is usually limited to questions that seek to identify a member or members of a known group, e.g. "Which one is larger, a lemon or a watermelon?", "Which of the two, Bob or John, is the taller boy?" "Which US presidents fought in World War 2?" Where a group is not listed, or obvious, the word "what" is more properly used. Example : "Which California port handles the most shipping?" Example : "What country has the largest population?"

Wich is an old spelling of the word wick from candle wick or lantern wick. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the word which. In place names (Greenwich, Sandwich) it's from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "bay" or "river mouth".

"Which" means "what one" such as What one of these cookies do you want or Which of these cookies do you want? It never means that and "that" never means "which". You will often see people mix these two words up and over use them in their writing habits.
