The Navy SEAL emblem or rather the more correct term 'insignia' is made up of four different symbols; Anchor, Eagle, Trident and a Pistol. In each talon the eagle is holding something, in the eagles right talon it is holding a trident which symbolizes the 'sea king Neptune'. In its right talon the eagle is holding a cocked pistol which symbolizes both that they operate on land and that they are always prepared and ready. The anchor displays that the SEALS are a part of the Navy. Here is a detailed image of the Navy SEAL insignia: http:/patrioticseal.comTrident1.jpg Most correct is breast insignia. The Eagle symbolizes attack. We are totally offensive. The eagle is pouncing, if you will. The job: aquire intel, catch or kill bad guys.

Anchor, we are navy only people. Trident, we come from under the water. Weapon, not intended for self defence. Eagle, the only recognized eagle form in America where the head isn't above the wings, why because We are attack!!! Saw this breast insignia drawn and designed right in front of my eyes at UDT 22. That's the explanation I got then.

The term "SEAL" stand for "SEa', "Air" & "Land", the 3 elements that a Navy SEAL is expert at unconventional warfare in.

All SEAL's are trained as experts in Underwater Demolition and are trained to swim/survive in freezing water for long periods. They are also trained in underwater incursions, attacking ships at sea by gaining access from the surface of the ocean, and are trained to dive with exotic air mixtures at different depths.

They are trained Airborne experts, masters at conventional parachute jumps, HALO and LALO jumps as well. On land, there are no better operators at guerrilla warfare. SEAL's are tasked with the toughest missions - they are Olympic athletes with guns and explosives.

What sets them apart is that most other Special Operations branches of the US or other nations are experts at one or two elements - Air and Land usually, but not all 3.
